Galaxy Love to COCA

We are a venue that has been supporting the fringe and alternative arts scene in Christchurch for the past 20 years, providing a much-needed space for events that champion creativity, diversity, and inclusion.

At The Galaxy, we are committed to offering a safe and welcoming environment for alternative and creative communities—those who may struggle to find venues elsewhere in the city. From dance parties, to draw-fests, from comedy, to drag shows, we have been having fun on the eastern frame of Christchurch since 2000.

Last August, we were privileged to host an incredible event called Cirque du Rave, which was promoted and organized by COCA Gallery and their vibrant, creative community. It was an absolute pleasure to witness such a brilliant showcase of local talent on the decks, quality music and an eclectic, diverse crowd. The guests were a true reflection of what we stand for a shared set of values with the organisers—creative, kind, inclusive individuals coming together to celebrate art / music and connection.

In Christchurch, it can be challenging for some communities to find spaces to socialise freely, feel safe, and be their authentic selves. We were honoured to provide that space for this event and to support a community that might otherwise be excluded, marginalized, or targeted in more mainstream settings. The collective behind the event worked hard to create an inclusive culture which was reflected in their marketing and to maintain strong connections within the creative underground scene. It was our pleasure to host Cirque du Rave, and we hear a whisper that soon we may see the crew and community on the dance floor here again !

At The Galaxy, we firmly believe that social activity and vibrant cultural events are essential for strengthening communities and building resilience in people. When people come together to share music, dance, and meaningful conversations, they forge new connections and networks of support. Music, in particular, has the power to be a catalyst for bringing people together—creating shared experiences that transcend differences and foster a sense of belonging. In these moments of collective joy, people find strength, healing, and renewed energy to face life’s challenges.
